Corn, manioc or cassava, yerba maté, tropical fruits and vegetables are staples of Paraguayan cuisine. They are usually eaten with meat.... lots of meat.
Vegetarians beware: beef is cheap, extremely good, and to be found everywhere. Most weekends Paraguayans will have an 'asado' (barbeque)consisting of enormous quantities of beef, sausages, ribs and salads. So'o Ku'i (Meat And Rice Pie), So'o Yo-sopy (Beef Soup), Bori-bori (Beef Soup With Dumplings), and milanesa (Breaded Beef Steak) are all very popular. No self-respecting Paraguyan will be seen without their guampa (a cup made out of a cow's horn) and bombilla (a metal straw with a filter at one end), drinking terere (an infusion made from herbs and yerba maté). This drink is famed for keeping you cool in hot weather, but also perhaps making you a tad lethargic...
